Have An EV, You Need A Good Charging Infrastructure, Right?

Today we run two 30 kWh Leafs 300 miles to test out the charging infrastructure on Ecotricity’s Electric Highway, the Polar Network as far as possible and CYC in Scotland. Also some friendly competition between myself and Jonathan of Eco-Cars. It should be fun!!!!

  • You closed the video by say β€œno issues with Ecotricity, Polar or CYC” I would LOVE you to repeat in a car that has a CCS connection rather than a Chademo. Something like an i3. We i3 drivers have had a really bad time on Ecotricity units. Also you did this during the middle of the night / early morning. Repeat during the day to see how many units are iced.. We need really world testing guys!!!

  • So when go topup at a Holiday Inn do you need to go in and add your registration to their system so you don't get a parking ticket? Most Holiday Inn's I have been to have number plate cameras and you need to registered. Just wondered how it worked with using onsite chargers.

  • This is a WIN for Jonathan the plant man πŸ™‚ After a Stewards Enquiry the first placed driver has been disqualified for illegal driving ( speeding ) πŸ™‚ well in my mind anyway πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

  • My biggest contention with Polar is their subscription model, I signed up to their free trial last year and didn't use one of their chargers so decided it was a waste of time. I get the impression that the instant app doesn't give access to all of their chargers (am I correct in this?). In addition it strikes me a lot of Polar chargers are in places that have poor access (the local hospital for instance). Maybe things are different elsewhere. In 11000 miles I have had to charge four times away from home. The Ecotricity chargers have been two of these (and perfect) and the others were on 22 kw POD point posts (the fastest Zoe can take – adds about 100 miles per hour charging). The Ecotricity network definitely has chargers in the best places for long journeys in my opinion though I like that you plug into a POD point and start charging before opening the app.

  • Nerdy question… when you were talking about each others speed looking at the Glympse app, were you adding 10% for Leaf speed error or were you quoting the gps speed. So if you said 'Jonathan was doing 70' was that showing as 63mph on Glympse?
Nerdy questions aside, another really enjoyable EV video guys, well done. Pete.

  • This is all good entertainment, part race, part Infrastructure and I've seen many over the past 3 years, but it also does concern me, it may do harm than good. Others may disagree, but if we are to see a bigger take up of EVs, the messages in this type of video dont help. Short range, multiple stops, drafting, reducing speed and running at Zero SOC all sound alarm bells for 'normal' ICE drivers. I have 2 EVs, so I'm ok with it, Im already converted! but if I was a ICE driver watching this video it would reinforces the stereotype views and would scare me off. More focus on the next gen EVs 200miles+ is needed. We need to move away from this now. Ok it will make a boring race if 2 Teslas went to Falkirk, but then again maybe you should? just to show how easy it was, no one to my knowledge has done this on purpose just to show how 'normal' it can be. If an ICE driver saw that type of video it may sway them over.

  • got a 300 mile trip from mid Devon to port Talbot and back at the weekend , gonna budget for 4 stops each way…..have to use ecotricity pretty much all the way…….be my longest trip yet in my 24kw ENV…….

  • Another great video. I recently did Tamworth to Penzance for a long weekend in my 24kwh Leaf using Ecotricity all the way. I was lucky enough to get one free charge and encountered no problems whatsoever.

  • You know what's funny (no disrespect mate ;)) and Nobody picks up the this is the 205 (like the ioniq) vs the 215 section tyres! Is so relevant to mpkwh the accenta with 205s has around 7 to 8% less friction meaning better efficiency hence why the ioniq doesn't fit 215 tyres πŸ˜‰ just a thought guys. Cheers ps never iced? I have a screen shot of the best polar charger in the world iced and gets the most idiotic location for a charging station at Redbridge Station car park (took me three go arounds to locate it (its since been taken off polar map but its still on zap map so us newbs will use zap map and think it's available which it is working but permanently Iced ;)) check the zap map comments if you want πŸ˜‰
