Kona Electric charging / Podpoint , failed tests

I’m not sure why I write these descriptions as no one seems to read them but….

Today I set out to test warming the battery before charging helping to speed up charging. FAILED

Next try the Polar rapid that cut out on me after 15 mins, 3 times but not using the heater at the same time which might have caused the cut outs. FAILED

Oh well at least the car hire charged it just took longer than expected.

  • Dies EV notify doesn't have more info about the battery? To be sure the battery temperature should be measured. Isn't the battery liquid cookies? Can't we measure via the liquid measure what's going on? And then the questionnaire, van we heat the liquid instead? Maybe more efficient than an inefficient driving style.

  • If you’re not in a hurry, then the extra wait is just an irritation. If you need to be somewhere at a particular time. Then having to set off another 30mins for one charge and maybe an hours for a two charge trip. Will get real tiresome real quick. I presume the Niro will have the same problem and probably the new Soul too. Not a plus in selling point s.

  • I guess unless you have the equivalent of leaf spy to tell just how hot the battery is then you're never going to know whether you've got it hot enough. See @lemontealeaf's recent video on the new rapidgate fix to see how hot you need to get the leaf to boost the speed. Hyundai have probably done something similar.

  • More comprehensive instrumentation is needed to understand what is going on. Does the vehicle provide a battery temperature indication? Is there a battery voltage indication?

    if you take the state of charge and add it to the charging rate you get a number
    That number will be close to 100 sometimes it will be slightly less and sometimes very rarely just over
    So up to 50% state of charge you get the maximum from the charger
    After 50% lets say 60% charged you will get 40Kw/Hour or slightly less
    At 70% state of charge you will get less than 30Kw/Hr
    I find that whatever the start "number" you get when you add the state of charge and charge rate together you can pretty much guess the charging rate for any SOC during the rest of the charge connection
    Not very sophisticated BMS , co-incidence, I don't know but check it out in case its only me 🙂

  • There is definitly a bug in the Kona TMS. We don't know if all Konas have a heater element in the TMS. There are news that the US-versions have no heater, the Canadian versions have it.
    But if there is one (2 kW) then it should show the amount of power used in the Energy Screen in the Kona in the point: Battery care.
    But it never shows an amout there.
    If there is a heater in the TMS it should bring the battery to 24° C. But nothing happens.
    We can hope that in summer the cooling system will work.

  • Not a cold charging issue but the charging battery management algorithm at work which takes into account the battery temp as part of it's protection of battery longevity. The sweet point at normal ambient is between 20% and 60% state of charge for maximum charge rate but the supply to the charger from the local grid to the charger company is also important – grid throttling applies too according to their supply agreement.

  • You need to drive for 30 minutes to warm the battery. Did you try charging when you went to Lincoln? The battery would have been warm then. But most of your charging will be done at home. You only need to worry about this for long journeys and your battery should be warm on those occasions.
