Remote Access Allows You to Control Your DVR

When the world revolved around the VCR, not only did you get to record things, but you got an education in the process. Programming your VCR was notoriously difficult, and many people owned VCR’s that flashed 12:00 the entire time they owned it. By the time manufacturers figured out how to make a programming setup people could use, VCR’s were dinosaurs. Today, with the advent of satellite and cable TV, the remote control and on screen guides, programming your satellite or cable box has become as easy as going to the show you want to record and clicking the button.

However, scheduling has become complex, and with the huge variety of channels available, finding what you want to watch and setting up to record it can be a challenge. Especially when there is another show on you want to watch while you are recording another. All too often, you wind up watching one program and all of a sudden your DVR wants to record something else, interrupting you while you’re watching the news or something else important. Digital Video Recorders (DVR) have definitely made recording programs much easier, however, they still need to be managed.

That’s where a lot of new devices and programs have come into play. You can find apps that will connect to your DVR, manage your recordings, and set up a scheduler for new programs and sporting events you want to watch later. The best part? Yes, you can do all this from your home computer, but now you can do the same things from your mobile device.

The most powerful tool you have to organize is your PC. Connect to your remote access DVR, sort through your recorded programs, set up schedules for new programs and away you go. There are times when you are not sitting at your computer. Or to a laptop for that matter.

This is where connecting by other devices can come into play. With apps for smart phones, the iPad and iPod Touch, you can now control things the same way you can with your computer. And when you’re away from your DVR and need to make changes, with those devices, you can be sitting in Starbucks or even in a taxi and make all the scheduling changes you want.

There isn’t much left that you can’t control when it comes to your TV. Enjoy it!

Save Paper Work and Time With an Access Control System

The word access means to provide authorization to the user for any of the tasks. There is similar meaning in understanding the concept of access control systems. It states that providing authorizations to any individual for the shorter periods or longer periods of time becomes easier to manage and integrate accordingly. There is a need to manage and handle high levels of security so that time is saved, paper work is reduced and also operating and maintenance costs are reduced.

We often say that access control systems are the powerful systems that monitor even the smallest of the systems in the large buildings, organizations and institutions for better safety and reliability. With the use of these systems, the critical tasks can be monitored and handled very efficiently. There are some of the key benefits in regards with the access control systems:

1. It handles critical situations very smartly and rapidly responds to any of the security threats and issues around.

2. In case of any threat, the management receives immediate alarm notifications so that steps can be taken to prevent happening to occur.

3. These systems are installed quickly and saves lot of time.

4. It also saves a lot of paper work as records are automatically stored within the database and can be accessed any time to verify the records of the employees in the organization.

5. It provides flexibility in every type of environment and is thus trusted by most of the customers.

To implement the access control systems, we have 3 types of controls:

1. Physical Controls: It provides security and access to one's personal computer or the group of computers. Physical access control can be related to a human and the alternative systems provide the authority to the individual to work on its controls. Few examples of physical control include: Alarms, Lightning, Locks, Security guards, etc.

2. Logical Controls: These types of controls are used to restrict the access to systems for unauthorized users. It protects and limits the number of available resources. Logical controls are also known as technical controls. Some of the examples include: Routers, Encryption Software, Smart-Cards, Firewalls, Access Control Lists (ACLs), etc.

3. Administrative Controls: These are the controls that are handled under the supervision of management and administration with proper planning, structure, security awareness along with the list of policies and procedures. Few examples include: Testing, Job-rotations, investigations, etc.

Biometrics is one of the big examples of the access control systems in terms of network security, home security and others. If people are still using the old-fashioned methods of securing their data, systems, home, etc. they are decreasing the invention of technologies and extremely creating lots of problems for them. Access control systems open the doors to opportunity and provide security, protection and integrity to the available resources.

Is Free Wireless Access Safe?

This is frighteningly easy to do, by setting up a fake access point hackers can easily trap your user names and passwords without your knowledge. These hackers can also install a virus that will enable them to reconnect even when you are not on the free wireless anymore, even scarier.

What should you do? Here are some helpful tips on protecting yourself while on public wifi:

· Look for signs indicating the name of the free Wifi also known as the SSID and be sure to log onto that network, check the spelling verbatim, hackers will use a fake name that is similar.

· On Windows Vista and 7 be sure to choose "Public" as your network type this shuts down your file sharing and limits network access. On Windows XP be sure to turn off "file sharing".

· Windows XP will logon automatically so if you're not using the Internet turn off your wireless adapter, this will also save your battery life.

· Try to avoid going to Websites that require passwords like email and banking.

The best way to protect yourself is to create a secure link between your laptop and another computer, the other computer can be your home PC or any trusted server on the Internet which can be free or a pay service.

Using your home PC would be the safest and it's free but it requires a little more work. At home you will install a Secure Shell Server, this will accept a secure connection from your laptop a good "free for personal use" one is called WinSSHD, just download and install it and be sure to read the instructions. On your laptop you will install the connection software called Tunnelier this will create a secure connection between the two computers. If you have a router at home like most people do you will have to open port 22 and forward it to the PC that has WinSSHD running and you will need your home IP address so that you can tell Tunnelier where to connect to.

If you do not want to use your home PC or do not have one you can sign up for a free Secure Shell Server (SSH) access that offers tunneling or a pay SSH which is safer and more reliable. Once you find a SSH service you can use Tunnelier to connect to it which will create a secure connection also.

Now all you have to do is configure your browser to go through the secure connection and you are finished. All your Internet traffic in your browser is encrypted and the hackers will not be able to see anything you are doing. To keep this article short I skipped over the configuration details of WinSSHD, Tunnelier, Browser, and the router, all these are easily found on Google.
