So, a week ago, you might remember, I roasted No-co – the Ohio-based Retardistani manufacturer of battery chargers and jump starters, after they let their lawyers off the chain following an Austin Powers-style international incident involving them and a competitor, a notebook, and a Stormy Daniels-style spanking with a perfect-bound business magazine.
…maybe not the spanking, but everything else actually happened. It all occurred at a sleepy little trade show here in South Shitsville, which is south of Arseholeistan, where I live, and east of Australia’s only living cemetary, Adelaide. The whole event was inspired by Charles Chaplain and the Keystone Cops.
No-co is a 105-year-old company, family owned, and the president is Jonathon Nook. He’s the latest in a long line of Nooks to occupy the corner penthouse of No-co central.
So, imagine my delight when an e-mail from el presidente himself appeared in my inbox shortly after publication of that report. (In my case, this is literally true – I did experience delight. There are 1000 different flavours of F-U-N in this game, and I was pretty sure this was going to be one of my favourites.)
So I slipped the ceramic plates into my vest – front and rear – safety first – and opened Mr Nook’s missive.

Damnit. Not what I was expecting. Mr Nook is clearly a PR ninja. And I’d been lulled into a false sense of security by the tragic state of automotive PR in Arse-trailer, which really is pathetic…
I found myself deftly painted into a corner where the only dignified option was to thank Mr Nook sincerely for taking it all so well. And I hate that. Furthermore, I was compelled graciously to agree to review some of No-co’s products. How the hell could I say ‘no’ in good grace?
And – and this really hurt – I felt obliged to congratulate Mr Nook on his unexpected equanimity. Seriously, this was one hell of a classy reach-out, I think you’d agree.
Clearly, I was in the ring with the Cassius Clay of corporate comms. Up against the ropes. Get the number of that bus. My opponent was a friggin’ Jedi knight. Sixty seconds still on the clock. The towel goes down. The white flag comes up. I’d been beaten. In a few well-chosen sentences. Just like that.
So it looks like we’ll be reviewing some No-co gear. (And I’ll work out a giveaway for you when that happens. So that’s nice. Subscribe now. Or don’t. But do.)
I mainly point this event out to contrast Mr Nook’s calm, classy equanimity, and the way he cunningly used getting roasted to manufacture for his company a solid PR opportunity.
(And he had a sense of humour. Let’s not forget that. A real rarity in the corporate world, I think you’d agree.) I’m contrasting this against the torrent of raw sewage that to me represents the way many Australian carmakers play the PR game.
Here in Shitsville automotive PR is a ham-fisted bitch-fest fuelled by ambient temperature IQs, floating on a cesspit of mediocrity, and conducted in a sheltered friggin’ workshop – with a few notable exceptions. You know who you are.
(If I speak to you, you’re one of those exceptions.)
In the main though, the default standard of PR down under is appalling and embarrassing.
PS – On the room-temperature IQ thing: If you’re going to suffer that, then a country such as the USA is the place to become afflicted. At least you guys in Retardistan use the Fahrenheit scale. There’s plenty of RTIQ here in Shitsville, I’d suggest, which – thanks to using celsius – is a much more serious problem in automotive PR departments…

India And Automotive Recycling

However, India's auto recycling or auto shredding ecosystem is still in its infancy. The sector is largely dominated by the unorganized sector. Areas like Mayapuri & Jama Masjid in Delhi, Kurla in Mumbai, Pudupet in Chennai, are the current graveyards for scrap vehicles.

The activities in these areas is largely unorganized and unregulated. This means that the recycling process is primarily transported out without sophisticated equipment & processes. The recovery and efficiency is also low. The processes not only pose health hazards, they also inherently have serious security loopholes.

Health hazards surrounding the markets have attracted attention in the past. There was a case of radiation caused due to Cobalt 60 pencils, a few years ago. Lead batteries too are harmful in content. Oils from vehicles drained off on roads, result in extremely unhygienic conditions around. The practice of gas cutting creates an amount of pollution, and makes it impossible to breathe – worsening the abysmal condition of air quality which exists in Delhi either ways.

In addition to the existing pipeline of old vehicles that stream into these markets, the government is drafting the much-needed End of Life policy for cars. With the average life of a car in India being 18 years, as against 9.73 years in Europe, vehicles run way beyond their expiration date. The effect is obvious: An old car produces as much as 10 times the emission of new cars, owning to obsolete technology, etc. The Delhi government, to begin with, has drawn a policy to scrap 37 lakh vehicles older than 15 years, roughly 37% of the cars registered in Delhi.

"There is no rule at present to guide the police or the government as to what is to be done with the vehicles after they are impounded. first-of-its-kind policy in India, "commissioner (transport) Varsha Joshi had told Hindustan Times.

The question is now this: Does Delhi (or India) have adequate and right capacity to recycle these old cars?

India will need to borrow best practices followed in Europe & US to help raise the auto recycling practices to an organized level.

In this process, the vehicle is first sent for de-pollution. De-pollution Process safely removes all hazardous waste – batteries, air bags, gas cylinders, mercury switches, tires, air conditioning units, fluids and oils – this is done through sophisticated machinery. The vehicle is then sent for dismanting where good parts are removed for further resale / use. Remainder of the vehicle is then pressed / sheared.The press vehicle is then sent to the shredder plant for further processing.

During shredding 3 components of the automobile are segregated:

• Ferrous – recycled into material
• Non-ferrous – recycled into material
• Shredded residual – this is sent to landfills or further recycled to the potential possible

The organized process is transported out through machines as against brute force used in unorganized markets. Near zero pollution & waste is produced as a result of these organized processes.

The result is a circular economy, where steel scrap produced is reused, and dependence on extraction of natural resources as well as on imports of steel scrap is reduced (India currently imports steel scrap to the tune of 8 million tonnes). Here, the need of the hour for the Indian context is not only an efficient End-of-Life vehicle policy, but also organized vehicle recycling practices.

Automotive Load Managers For Emergency Vehicles

Automotive load managers for emergency vehicles are designed to monitor and control the transfer of electrical energy in an automotive system. The most advanced load managers will incorporate load sequencing and load shedding functions. These two functions will help maintain the vehicles optimal electrical state, which is paramount for any emergency vehicle.

The load sequencing function is used to turn all selected loads ON or OFF from on central switch. Loads can be anything from, emergency lights, sirens, A/C, radios, etc. When electrical loads of the type encountered in an automotive application are switched ON or OFF they create large current and voltage fluctuations in the electrical system in which they are connected. The larger the current consumption of a load, the greater the impact the load has in the generation of electrical transients or line noise when the load is energized or deenergized (Turned ON or OFF).

These current fluctuations, in turn, contribute to the generation of voltage spikes of a magnitude that is high enough to damage sensitive electronic devices connected to the electrical system. This would be the last thing you want while riding in an emergency vehicle. The load sequencing function of a good load manager will allow you to turn all the selected loads ON or OFF from one location to minimize electrical disturbances and the effect this action may have upon the rest of the electrical system. The load shedding function is used to monitor the voltage level of the vehicles battery. If a decrease in the battery voltage is sensed, the load manager will start shedding loads. A good load manager will allow you to program what loads and in what sequence they will be shed. One the loads battery voltage returns to its normal value, the loads that were previously shed are switched on.

The examples in the previous paragraphs were for when a vehicle is in motion. If the vehicles alternator is not supplying enough power when the vehicle is idling, the load manager should have a high idle function which will send a signal the vehicles engine speed control to set the idle speed to a higher level. An action equivalent to pressing the accelerator while in park. The higher engine speed is maintained until the battery voltage returns to normal or until the engine is no long idling.
