ONE YEAR INTO ELECTRIFY AMERICA

There’s a great, long-read CNBC article all about Electrify America which I recommend today. “Almost a year to the day after opening its first charging station, Electrify America says it is rolling out the country’s fastest-growing network of fast chargers. Funded by $2 billion from Volkswagen’s 2016 diesel emissions settlement, it has a goal of building hundreds of stations and putting nearly 2,000 chargers in place by the end of this year.” says CNBC: “Setting up a nationwide infrastructure is the next big challenge, according to many analysts. An August study by McKinsey & Co. projected it will cost as much as $50 billion to ensure public charging stations are as easily accessible as gas stations in three key markets — the U.S., Europe and China. The U.S. alone is expected to require an investment of as much as $11 billion, McKinsey estimated.”

But why replicate the gas station model? Shouldn’t we charge at home and work?

“Electrify America’s new Level 3 systems will almost all provide a minimum of 150 kilowatts at 400 volts and many will push even further, taking that up to 250 kW and 800 volts. That’s far more than most of the current crop of electric cars can handle. The new Porsche Taycan will be the first to be able to make full use of the technology, which can add about 20 miles of range per minute. To make things easier and speed up the charging process, Electrify America this week is rolling out a new smartphone app that can be used to locate its charging stations and see how long it will take for someone already hooked up to finish charging.”

PORSCHE TAYCAN’S INTERIOR SEEN FOR THE FIRST TIME IN SPY PHOTOS

“In these two spy images taken from the Taycan Forum, you can see that the cabin of the first all-electric Porsche is almost the same as what the Mission E concept had in its debut three years ago.” says Motor1.com today: “The resemblance starts at the dashboard layout, which is crowned by a horizontal digital display that flanks across the dashboard. Moreover, the touchscreen control panel by the center console has been carried over from the concept.”

AUDI NETWORKS WITH TRAFFIC LIGHTS IN EUROPE

Audi is introducing the vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) service “Traffic Light Information” to Europe. From July Audi will network new models with the traffic lights in Ingolstadt/Germany; further European cities will follow from 2020 onwards. Then cars will be more likely to catch a “green wave” in the city: Audi drivers will see in the cockpit what speed is required to reach the next traffic light on green. If that is not possible within the permitted speed limit, there will be a countdown to the next green phase. Driving in cities will thus become more relaxed and efficient. In the USA, Audi customers have already been using this service since late 2016. Audi is the first manufacturer worldwide to network its series-production models with traffic lights in cities. In the USA, Audi customers have been using the “Time-to-Green” function for two years: if the driver will reach the lights on red, a countdown in the Audi virtual cockpit or head-up display counts the seconds to the next green phase. This service is now available at more than 5,000 intersections in the USA, for example in cities including Denver, Houston, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Portland and Washington D.C. In the US capital alone, about 1,000 intersections are linked to the Traffic Light Information function.

Since February Audi has offered a further function in North America. The purpose of this is especially to enable driving on the “green wave”. “Green Light Optimized Speed Advisory” (GLOSA) shows to the driver in the ideal speed for reaching the next traffic light on green.

Audi etron will get this function.

SK INNOVATION TO INVEST $490 MLN IN 2ND CHINESE CAR BATTERY PLANT

“South Korea’s SK Innovation said on Wednesday that it plans to invest 579.9 billion won ($488.30 million) to build its second China factory for electric vehicle batteries, in a bet that China will open up its market to Korean battery makers.” reports Reuters today: “The latecomer to the battery market is…

DIESEL IN EUROPE

A quick stat on the rise and fall, and fall and fall of Diesel from Matthias Schmidt @auto_schmidt: “European #diesel mix of new passenger car sales fell below one third in September… Sep YTD: 9% Last 4 qtrs: Q3 ’18: 35.2% Q2 ’18: 36.7% Q1 ’18: 38.5% Q4 ’17: 41.6% Last time annual diesel mix fell below 1/3 was the year 2000 (32.3%)”

30 FAST CHARGERS NOW ONLINE FOR ELECTRIFY AMERICA

A new update today about Electrify America progress ahead of the on onslaught of EVs which should be coming 2019, at least early 2020. They have 30 fast charging stations now online and a huge task ahead of them to spend the $2bn settlement with the EPA and California Air Resources Board over dieselgate. Of those 30 stations, most have 7 CCS chargers plus a 1 CHAdeMo point. This weeks question of the week is where would you put a charger – if you were thinking Walmart, they’ve beaten you to it. Over 100 off the Electrify America chargers will be at a Walmart store. But that’s still a drop in the ocean with more than 2,000 Ultra Fast chargers in place by June 2019. “Electrify America DC fast charging stations display clear, up-front pricing. Electrify America charging will include the following elements: $1.00 session fee + per minute charging cost + idle fee of $0.40/minute (if applicable). Our introductory charging cost pricing is $0.30 to $0.35 per minute of charging”

MOST OF THE EU’S EV CHARGERS ARE IN JUST FOUR COUNTRIES

“While battery-powered vehicles may be cheaper to run and maintain compared to their petrol- and diesel-powered cousins, the European Union isn’t yet the perfect place to charge them and keep them going because more than three quarters (76 percent) of the EU’s charging points are concentrated across just four countries – the Netherlands, Germany, France and the UK. What’s more, those countries only make up 27 percent of the Union’s total area” reports Motor1.com: “The country with the most dense concentration of electric vehicle charging points in the EU is currently the Netherlands, where 28 percent of charging points cover one percent of the total area of the EU. The Netherlands also has solid fast charging networks like Fastned. There is currently around 100,000 charging points the in the European Union according to the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA), and that number should multiply at least 20 times by 2025 giving the EU 20 million charging points to handle the anticipated rise in sales of plug-in cars. To meet that target, 1.9 million charging points need to be produced and sold within 7 years.”

CHINA SPEEDS UP EV INFRASTRUCTURE CONSTRUCTION

“The Chinese government has come up with a plan to accelerate infrastructure construction for electric vehicles (EVs). Chinese premier Li Keqiang at a state council meeting last week released a guidance plan for the EV industry, aimed at building sufficient charging poles to meet demand from at least 5mn EVs by 2020.” according to Argus Media: “The plan requires all parking spots at new residential buildings to have charging poles and at least 10pc of spots at public parking facilities to have charging poles. This is to ensure one charging pole in a public area for every 2,000 EVs. China is the world’s largest EV producer and consumer. It produced 795,000 EVs last year and is on target to produce 1mn EVs in 2018. Beijing is aiming to double production of EVs to 2mn by 2020 to save energy and curb pollution. China produced only 8,200 EVs in 2011. China as of August has installed at least 662,000 charging poles across the country — 275,000 public poles and 387,000 private poles. The central government’s guidance plan comes after many Chinese provinces introduced regional plans to boost the use of EVs.”

ELECTRIFY AMERICA ANNOUNCES SECOND $200 MILLION ZERO EMISSION VEHICLE INVESTMENT

Electrify America today announced its next $200 million investment in Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) infrastructure as well as education and awareness in California which is outlined in its Cycle 2 California ZEV Investment Plan submitted to the California Air Resources Board (CARB). Cycle 2 is a 30-month investment period, which begins in July 2019. The investment announced today will build on Electrify America’s initial priorities and expand into new areas, where the need for electric vehicle charging stations and technology are greatest or are most likely to be used regularly.

Metropolitan Areas: The central focus of electric vehicle charging infrastructure investment in Cycle 2 will shift to more DC Fast Charging (DCFC) stations within metro areas, where electric vehicle (EV) drivers are expected to charge most often. The DC Fast Charging stations will be placed in retail locations but also consider the needs of adjacent multi-unit dwellings where Level 2 (L2) residential charging deployment is oftentimes challenging.

Highways & Regional Routes: The new Cycle 2 investments announced today will continue to build out a highway network of DCFC stations featuring charging power up to 350 kilowatts

Residential: EV drivers conduct ‘more than 80 percent of their charging at home. First, Electrify America will develop an online tool that promotes and connects EV buyers with the wide range of residential charging incentives. Electrify America will offer ‘no-money-down’ residential chargers and installation, enabling buyers who cannot or choose not to pay for the L2 charger installation at home. The cost of installation will be incorporated into a monthly fee. Electrify America will develop a platform that will allow drivers with a home charger to earn financial rewards for plugging in and supporting a demand response platform for grid electric power stability.

WHY OIL’S MARCH TOWARD $100 IS COMING AT THE RIGHT TIME FOR ELECTRIC CARS

“Fuel prices reached a four-year high last month, concentrating consumers’ minds on the relative costs of internal combustion versus electric motors. For companies preparing to bring a record number of electric and hybrid models to market in 2019, oil’s rally could turbocharge demand.” reports Business Standard: “Crude oil has jumped 27 percent this year to more than $85 a barrel and major traders predict prices could reach $100 this winter as U.S. sanction of Iranian exports strain global supply. The rally has started to feed through to prices at the pump. In the U.S., average gasoline prices are on the verge of breaching $3 a gallon for the first time since 2014. utilities are pouring money into charging networks, anticipating the technology will catch on. Enel SpA in Italy, Vattenfall AB in the Nordic region and Centrica Plc in the U.K. all are building up systems to recharge car batteries even before it’s obvious how any of them can make money.”
