Homemade 12V Lead Acid Battery Charger – COMPLETED Version



Finally took the time to finish off my homemade battery charger for 12V lead acid batteries. I took a M.O.T. and stripped out the secondary, and wound roughly 20 turns of 12ga copper wire. 15.2 VDC open circuit. More turns of wire = higher voltage.

Excellent & Simple Battery Charger (Gel/Lead Acid/Li-Ion/+ more)



This circuit has been in use for 24 hours a day over the past 4-6 months. It operates perfectly. I used this circuit to charge two 18650 Li-Ion batteries for my cordless vacuum cleaner. You can charge many different battery types with this circuit. If you charge (2) Li-Ion batteries in series as I did, be sure to affix a 3A/ 70-90 degree Celsius thermal fuse between both batteries using thermal heatsink compound and foil tape. The fuse will then be wired in series with the 2 batteries. Also set charger output voltage to 8.33V – 8.36V, and use a 1 ohm resistor in the circuit.

12V Lead Acid Battery Charger(Homemade)



I took a MOT and carefully stripped out the 2000V Secondary and replaced it with a low voltage high current winding of 18-20T or 12ga wire. New fully rectified DC output is 15.8VDC. An electrolytic capacitor of 1500uf was also added for smoothing purposes(Not much smoothing is required for charging lead acid batteries). Also includes a voltage monitoring circuit which allows you to know when the voltage of the battery being charged has reached completion. A green LED will be brightly illuminated to let you know to unplug the charger.

Homemade 6V / 2.5 Amp Power Supply/Battery Charger



If your looking for a HIGHLY efficient (6VDC 2.5A / 6VAC 3.0A) power supply or 6V lead acid battery charger, then look no further. This power supply/charger is made using a 120V (MOT) microwave oven transformer, by performing the modifications shown in this video. 120V transformer current at idle(NO LOAD) only draws 30mA, and using a full 2.5A load, 200mA. NO heating issues of the core whatsoever. As usual, always be very careful when working with 120VAC/240VAC projects!

Cut-Off Circuit For 12V Lead Acid Battery Charging



If you are looking for a simple but effective Lead Acid battery charger cut-off circuit, then look no further. You can use this circuit in conjunction with any battery charger(except capacitive types) which do not have an automatic shut-off once the battery voltage has climbed to 14.2V(You can adjust this value with the zeners). You can modify the circuit to charge 6V lead acid batteries instead of 12V as shown in this video. Just replace the relay coil with a 6V type, use a lower voltage power supply (8-12VDC Open Circuit), replace the 12v zener leading to the base of the NPN with a 6V or 6.2V, along with the same (2) 1n4001’s in series, replace the 12V zener to the relay coil with a 6/6.2V zener, and cut the value of the LED resistor in half.
