Types of Bicycle Lights

There are many different bicycle lights to choose from, and it can be difficult to choose the best one for your needs. Things to consider include the type of light bulb, the power source, and where you want to mount the light to your bicycle.

Bicycle head lights are those mounted to the front of your bicycle that are white and help you to see ahead of you and helps others (drivers and pedestrians) see you. Depending on your riding conditions, you may settle for a cheap headlight system that is more to help others to see you to prevent accidents, or you might need a bright light to help you find your way on a dark bicycle path.

Depending on the length of time and frequency of your nighttime riding, you may decide on an alkaline battery powered light, or one that you can charge while at work before your evening bicycle commute home. The type of light bulb (LED, and halogen are two common types) can affect how long the battery lasts, and also the price of the system.

Rear bicycle lights are always red and are strictly to help others behind you to see you. These lights can be set to blink mode or steady. Blink mode is essential to your safety especially while riding on a road at night. The blinking will help draw attention to you while a steady light might else be overlooked. These lights most commonly use LED bulbs. Some rear bicycle lights can be seen a great distance, while others might not be bright enough to be seen quickly by drivers in conditions where there are many other lights around.

Different types of bicycle lights also have different power sources. The simplest and most basic are standard non-rechargeable alkaline batteries. These batteries are cheap, but they are wasteful. However, they tend to last a very long time. Many bicycle lights these days are using lithium-ion batteries. These small compact batteries hold a long charge and can be recharged hundreds of times. Many lithium-ion powered lights can even be charged from the USB ports on your computer giving you a quick and easy way to charge your lights without having to use a dedicated charging adapter.

While headlights are typically mounted to your bike's handlebars, many lights can also be fitted to your helmet. By having the light on your helmet, it enables you to direct the light to exactly where you need it. This can be helpful in intersections since it allows you to direct the light right at a driver to help them notice you. Rear lights are typically mounted to your seat post, but many can also be mounted to your clothing or a backpack.

Although there are many different types of bicycle lights to choose from, it is essential that you have lights on when you ride in low light conditions or at night. Your safety depends on it!

Choosing Cycle Lights

Switch

As bike lights get more and more sophisticated the switch does more than just turn on and off your lights. It also tends to allow you to select one of what may be several different modes. That means that the switch can not be fiddly to operate. You might after all be out on the trail in the middle of Winter wearing thick gloves and you need to still be able to operate your lights without having to stop and take them off. The flip side of this is that they should also not be easy to operate accidentally. A lot of manufacturers have now started to add backlit switches to allow you to see where the switch is easily at night. Many of these also double as battery life indicators as well as mode indicators.

Batteries

There has been a revolution going on in the battery industry and ever more efficient, charge resistant Lithium Ion batteries are still evolving. Current batteries are not only more powerful but they are also lighter and tougher than they have ever been before, especially when compared to older lead acid and NiMH batteries. However, as I said, things are still evolving and the efficiency of batteries can vary wildly from one model to another. So, when you are out shopping and comparing different lights do not try and estimate run time by the size of the battery and quoted ampere hours of the manufacturer. Seek out independent reviews in your favorite cycling magazine or online and go by the tested run times.

Mounts

There are many different ways now to mount a light to your bike and in some cases you may not want to mount the light on your bike at all and may want to opt for a helmet mounted light, or maybe even both. Go for the type of mount that suits you best and this will depend on the main type of cycling you do. If you go for a helmet mounted light though, make sure that the mount is really secure but also ensure that the total weight of the helmet once the light is fitted is not to high or you will end up with neck ache.

Chargers

This is probably the item that you will least be concerned with when buying new lights, but that may be a mistake. There are many charger types to choose from, including simple USB lead cases to full on battery docking stations that let you set up your lighting options via your PC. Again, choose something that suits you and remember to check what the charged charging times are or you might end up being left in the dark if you have chosen one that takes a long time to charge when you only remember an hour before you need your lights that they are flat from the night before.

LEDs

In a similar way to the battery industry, the lighting industry has also been going through a bit of a transformation recently. It's not that long ago that LEDs or Light Emitting Diodes were not practical for anything more that decorating the Christmas tree due to their low power. That has all changed despite and year after year LEDs are emitting more light. For example, on average, cycle lights that are on offer in 2012 are 7% – 10% brighter than they were in 2011 and that trend is set to continue. They also draw a lot less power than normal bulbs and there before your batteries will last longer. One thing to be careful of though and something you may want to compare between one light and another is the operating temperature. Some of them get quite hot and controlling the heat they produce has been one of the challenges for LED manufacturers.

Leads

All in one systems for lights are becoming increasingly popular as they do away with the need for leads running from the battery unit to the light unit. However, being aware of the limitations of two unit systems is important. Cheaper systems may only offer simple 'water-proof' jack to jack leads but the more you pay the more you tend to find an efficiency increase in complexity and sealing making your lighting system more reliable, especially in wet weather.

How to Choose the Bike Rear Lights

As we can see, bike lighting makes the bike not just a means of transportation, but also a significant part of the image in the dark. Except for the aesthetic function, bright bikes are easier to be seen at night, which means more safety for bicycles and bicycle owners. Whatever it was, a complete set of bike lighting devices can not do without a powerful rear light, because this lighting system makes it possible to focus the attention of the traffic on the secure area around the bike. So, how to choose a rear light for your bike?

How to Choose the Bike Rear Lights

Typically, lights for bicycles should have weatherproof housing. And other important performance indicators are as follows.

Firstly, the light source had better be LED lighting. The rear lights with LEDs are more reliable and capable to work for a longer time than, for example, halogen lights. They also have the ability to reproduce a moderate or strong light. Moreover, LED lights are at low power.

Secondly, lumens, the determining unit of luminous flux, is another thing we should take into account as well as. It characterizes the intensity of light and measures it at the same distance from the object.

Finally, it would be a very good option if there are multiple modes. This will greatly save battery power to continue the work without recharging.

Recommendation

If you are badly in need of this, I would recommend you the 3-in-1 bicycle wireless rear light. It is a smart device with intelligent sound and anti-theft alarm. In addition, with IPX5 waterproof housing, COB light source, and 800mAh lithium battery, it gets a long lifetime and supports longtime continuously working. And it has 3 modes for adjustment, which is really energy-saving and provides more convenience for users. Moreover, this novelty supports remote control and USB charging. This undoubtedly provides more convenience in finding your own one among the large quantities of bikes at the parking lot. And the USB charging makes it no need of battery replacement.

Summary

The rear light is an essential thing that helps to ensure the safety of cycling at night, especially in the city traffic. Powerful rear lights will help to feel comfortable at all intercity roads. To install bicycle lights, you may need simple mounting, soldering skills, patience, and the necessary tools. With these, you may not feel difficult during the whole installation.
