Mercedes 126 Repair – Tracking Down Vacuum Leaks

Mercedes always had a penchant for using manifold vacuum as a control device for various ancillary systems. As elegant as that may be, it does result in an engine compartment with a multitude of vacuum lines and connections, on top of an already-complicated fuel injection and air-management system. If that myriad of components has never been renewed on a 20-year-old car, there will almost certainly be leaks, and they can be tricky to track down.

Vacuum Leak Symptoms

Major vacuum leaks will make the engine very rough or lumpy at idle as the optimum air-fuel (A / F) ratio is compromised by the intake of unmetered air. The car may still drive reasonably well, because the relative magnitude of the leak becomes much less significant as the throttle opens and the engine draws in the large amounts of air it needs for combustion under load. Idle speed may also be elevated, as the vacuum leak frustrates the efforts of the idle-control system to regulate the amount of air admitted to the intake ports.

The economy gauge in the instrument cluster should be pegged left at idle (except in gear with the A / C on). But this gauge is not accurate enough for proper diagnosis. We really want to connect a hand-held vacuum gauge to the intake manifold. The best place to do this is at the back of the manifold on the passenger side, where the gray line to the interior accessories takes its feed. A healthy engine at idle, according to most textbooks, should indicate 17-22 in / Hg of vacuum; In the case of a V-8 Mercedes 126, we should be seeing around 20. A lower number can indicate many things, including improper ignition timing and generally poor engine condition. But if the engine is other sound sound, vacuum leaks will be noticeable here.

Best Detection Method

One way to find vacuum leaks is with an automotive stethoscope. You may be able to actually hear the intake of false air. But the best way is to use your car's oxygen senor as a diagnostic aid. The oxygen sensor on the early V-8's is a single wire device, sending a voltage close to 1.0 when the A / F ratio is very rich and close to 0.0 when the mixture is very lean. By connecting the sensor's output wire through a voltmeter to battery ground, we can use it to test for vacuum leaks. To do this:

  • Get the sensor HOT by driving the car.
  • Test the sensor's lean response by creating a massive vacuum leak. Disconnect the gray line at the back of the manifold, where you hooked up your vacuum gauge.
  • Test the sensor's rich response by spraying carb cleaner into the intake. (The air cleaner needs to be off for this work.)
  • If the sensor is not responding correctly, replace it. It is vital for proper mixture control and fuel economy.
  • If the sensor is working, test for vacuum leaks by spraying small amounts of carb cleaner around suspected leak areas, such as fuel injector seals and breath hoses. If you see a brief spike in the voltage, you've found a problem area.
  • Do not go crazy with the carb cleaner: it is hostile to old rubber.

Unfortunately, not all of the possible culprits can be reached with this procedure. The rubber "donuts" between the upper- and lower-halves of the intake manifold are almost impossible to test. But usually, some combination of this procedure plus temporarily isolating vacuum-powered accessories will expose the leak.

Finally, a word on a vacuum leak location that is easily overlooked, but which can be very serious if allowed to get too far. The vacuum line from the back of the intake plenum to the brake booster is critical for brake performance; these cars are very difficult to stop without servo assistance. The line itself is easy to inspect for cracks, but it's hard to verify the integrity of the check valve in the line. The valve can look fine from a distance, but hairline cracks may be developing right at that point where the thick tubing mates with the valve. Try flexing this area with the engine running and see if your id changes, and give it the carb cleaner spritz test, too. New lines, including the check valve, are $ 40-50 and worth replacing for peace of mind if the original is still on there. Do not ask me how I know …!

A new update today about Electrify America progress ahead of the on onslaught of EVs which should be coming 2019, at least early 2020. They have 30 fast charging stations now online and a huge task ahead of them to spend the $2bn settlement with the EPA and California Air Resources Board over dieselgate. Of those 30 stations, most have 7 CCS chargers plus a 1 CHAdeMo point. This weeks question of the week is where would you put a charger – if you were thinking Walmart, they’ve beaten you to it. Over 100 off the Electrify America chargers will be at a Walmart store. But that’s still a drop in the ocean with more than 2,000 Ultra Fast chargers in place by June 2019. “Electrify America DC fast charging stations display clear, up-front pricing. Electrify America charging will include the following elements: $1.00 session fee + per minute charging cost + idle fee of $0.40/minute (if applicable). Our introductory charging cost pricing is $0.30 to $0.35 per minute of charging”



“While battery-powered vehicles may be cheaper to run and maintain compared to their petrol- and diesel-powered cousins, the European Union isn’t yet the perfect place to charge them and keep them going because more than three quarters (76 percent) of the EU’s charging points are concentrated across just four countries – the Netherlands, Germany, France and the UK. What’s more, those countries only make up 27 percent of the Union’s total area” reports “The country with the most dense concentration of electric vehicle charging points in the EU is currently the Netherlands, where 28 percent of charging points cover one percent of the total area of the EU. The Netherlands also has solid fast charging networks like Fastned. There is currently around 100,000 charging points the in the European Union according to the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA), and that number should multiply at least 20 times by 2025 giving the EU 20 million charging points to handle the anticipated rise in sales of plug-in cars. To meet that target, 1.9 million charging points need to be produced and sold within 7 years.”



“The Chinese government has come up with a plan to accelerate infrastructure construction for electric vehicles (EVs). Chinese premier Li Keqiang at a state council meeting last week released a guidance plan for the EV industry, aimed at building sufficient charging poles to meet demand from at least 5mn EVs by 2020.” according to Argus Media: “The plan requires all parking spots at new residential buildings to have charging poles and at least 10pc of spots at public parking facilities to have charging poles. This is to ensure one charging pole in a public area for every 2,000 EVs. China is the world’s largest EV producer and consumer. It produced 795,000 EVs last year and is on target to produce 1mn EVs in 2018. Beijing is aiming to double production of EVs to 2mn by 2020 to save energy and curb pollution. China produced only 8,200 EVs in 2011. China as of August has installed at least 662,000 charging poles across the country — 275,000 public poles and 387,000 private poles. The central government’s guidance plan comes after many Chinese provinces introduced regional plans to boost the use of EVs.”

Researchers at the Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory have demonstrated a 120-kilowatt wireless charging system for vehicles–providing six times the power of previous ORNL technology and a big step toward charging times that rival the speed and convenience of a gas station fill-up. The wireless system transfers 120 kilowatts of power with 97 percent efficiency, which is comparable to conventional, wired high-power fast chargers. In the laboratory demonstration, power was transferred across a six-inch air gap between two magnetic coils and charged a battery pack. ORNL researchers created and demonstrated the world’s first 20-kilowatt wireless charging system, which is being modified for applications such as commercial delivery trucks. To achieve 120 kilowatts, the ORNL team created a new coil design co-optimized with the latest silicon carbide power electronic devices for a lightweight, compact system. The system’s architecture takes energy from the grid and converts it to high-frequency alternating current, which generates a magnetic field that transfers power across a large air gap. Once the energy is transferred to the secondary coil, it is converted back to direct current and stored in a vehicle’s batteries.



“We’ve seen spy photos of the next-generation Kia Soul a couple of times in the last few months and it’s only natural that a debut is imminent.” reports Anthony Karr from “Our friends from The Korean Cars Blog report the standard ICE-powered and fully-electric versions of the car will make their official premieres at the Los Angeles Auto Show in the second half of November this year. Nothing is confirmed at the moment, but it is believed sales in the United States will kick off in the second quarter of 2019. As far as the Soul EV is concerned, it will use the powertrain of the Niro EV, which means two battery packs will be on sale – with 34 kWh or 60 kWh. The larger of the two should provide a range of approximately 300 miles (485 kilometers) between two charges.”



“Volkswagen Group China is beginning construction in Anting of the Group’s first factory specifically designed for the Modular Electric Drive Kit (MEB) platform. The first model that will be produced in the factory of SAIC Volkswagen will be an electric Volkswagen brand SUV in 2020.” according to Green Car Congress: “Together with the FAW-Volkswagen factory in Foshan, which opened this summer, SAIC Volkswagen’s plant will begin to produce e-cars on the MEB platform directly after the first worldwide MEB-production starts in Zwickau, Germany.” Herbert Diess, Chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen Group, said: “Through Volkswagen’s MEB platform, we will be able to easily produce state-of-the-art electric vehicles for our Chinese customers on a high scale. The Volkswagen Group, its brands and their Chinese joint venture partners focus consistently on sustainable mobility and push the transformation of the automotive industry in China and worldwide. In this way, we emphasize the importance of the Chinese market for the Volkswagen Group.” “The facility is scheduled to be put into production by 2020 with a planned annual capacity of 300,000 vehicles. It will produce various new pure electric vehicles of SAIC VOLKSWAGEN, including medium- and large-sized pure electric SUVs, as well as battery systems. The factory will be supporting the Volkswagen Group’s e-mobility strategy in China. The vehicles being produced in Anting are based on the MEB, which is Volkswagen’s first pure electric automotive modular platform developed for mass production. ”

“The Porsche Taycan is still roughly a year away from hitting showrooms, but Porsche has further tipped its hand toward what its electric vehicle future is going to look like” according to CNET: “The Taycan production car, which was previewed by a pair of Mission E concepts, is expected to bring more than 600 horsepower, a 0-60 mph time of 3.5 seconds and boast a driving range of about 300 miles to the party.” “The Taycan is one of biggest creators of jobs in the history of Porsche” those are the words of Andreas Haffner, Member of the Executive Board responsible for HR and Social Affairs, Porsche. That’s because there’s a 6 billion euro investment in the electrification plan hiring 1,200 new employees. Some of the highlighted quotes from Porsche today: “By applying flexi-line production, Porsche will become the first vehicle manufacturer to use driverless transport systems in a continuous series production process. In addition to efficient processes, the revenue from digital products and services should also increasingly contribute to our economic success. We expect by 2025, roughly 50 percent of our products to be electrified, either with a fully electric engine or with a plug-in hybrid.” Meanwhile Automotive News Europe reports: ” its U.S. dealers will be required to shoulder a significant share. Porsche bumped up the number of high-speed chargers it would need to more than 700, or about 40 percent more than previously estimated. U.S. dealers will be on the hook for at least 200 of those. It’s a pricey ask of the 190-store brand. The chargers will cost retailers between $300,000 and $400,000 per store on average, Porsche estimated. The numbers of chargers dealers must install will be based on sales. Dealers are expected to install at least two fast chargers at each location along with a buffer battery that stores electricity from the grid and is less expensive than charging vehicles directly from the grid. The 350-kilowatt chargers can fill a vehicle battery to 80 percent — or about 250 miles (400 km) — in 15 to 20 minutes. Porsche is also in discussions with third-party networks, including Electrify America, ChargePoint and EVgo, to augment the network with additional nondealership chargers. That effort calls for at least 500 chargers along U.S. highways.” Todd Blue, CEO of IndiGO Auto Group: “We should walk slowly and allow healthy demand to dictate the future, not the government.”

The electric truck is using Model 3 drive units and it’s putting them to the test through long distance driving and pulling of heavy loads.”  


“6 Tesla owners club leaders from nine countries convened this week in Fremont, CA to meet, strategize, and plan for how clubs can continue to support Tesla owners across the globe.” in an article by Sean Mitchell for InsideEVs: “Tesla Club Owners are officially recognized by Tesla and have ongoing communication with Tesla representatives with the intent of enhancing the owner experience. Collectively, there are 60 officially recognized clubs in 17 countries and more than 28,000 members. ”  


“Northvolt, which is building Europe’s largest battery factory in Sweden, has joined forces with German luxury carmaker BMW and Belgium’s Umicore to develop a process for electric car batteries to be recycled.” according to a Reuters article today: “BMW had a funding investment of undisclosed size in the venture, the Swedish startup, which plans to build a factory in Sweden to produce 32 gigawatt hours (GWh) of battery capacity a year by 2023, said in a statement on Monday.”

On Weds Oct 10th at 11:01am somewhere in the US someone bought the millionth car with a plug since they came to market in 2011!  #pluginamerica. It took a bit longer than #Obama projected but we’re there, and the speed increases!!”  


And a tenth of those drivers are currently enjoying some electric smiles in their new Tesla Model 3. Because Tesla just reached the milestone of 100k Model 3s. It has been just over a year since production started and a few Model 3s took their first tentative metres off a new General Assembly production line. It’s all thanks to a strong start to Quarter 4 with an average of over 1,000 vehicles a day being built. Fred at Electrek pointed out the finer details to this story: “In overall production when accounting for the release candidates and engineering vehicles, Tesla actually achieved the milestone earlier this week, but according to a source familiar with Tesla’s production, regular production reached the milestone today. It’s an important milestone for Tesla, which is transitioning from a relatively niche automaker to a mass-market auto manufacturer with the Model 3. Tesla is already producing electric vehicles at a higher rate than any legacy automaker with no signs of change evident in the space. Perhaps legacy automakers should look at that 100,000th Model 3 milestone and look at their own efforts and revaluate what kind of volume they are planning for their own programs.” says Fred.  


“Australia reached the milestone of 50 public DC fast chargers (50 kW) installed (Tesla Superchargers aside).” reports Mark Kane for InsideEVs: “It’s still a long way til the infrastructure could be considered satisfying, but at least more manufacturers will be willing to introduce some EVs in the country. Around 70% of DC chargers in Australia were supplied by Tritium, founded in Brisbane. Recently, Tritium received an order for at least 40 Veefil RT-50kW DC fast chargers in New South Wales in Australia.”

“The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) has partnered with Monash University and technology provider Indra Australia to trial a microgrid” reports PV Tech: “The microgrid will be grid-connected and will include up to 1MW of rooftop solar, 20 buildings with automated energy management systems, 1MWh of battery storage and electric vehicle charging stations”

According to a report today from teh International Energy Agency and reported by Bloomberg: “The global fleet of electric vehicles is likely to more than triple to 13 million by the end of the decade from 3.7 million last year, according to a report released Wednesday from the Paris-based institution, which was set up to advise industrial nations on energy policy. Sales may soar 24 percent each year on average through to 2030.”

Here are some of the key findings of the IEA’s report:

And finally from Reuters: “Nearly 40 percent of daily crude oil production was lost from offshore U.S. Gulf of Mexico wells on Tuesday due to platform evacuations and shut-ins ahead of Hurricane Michael. In addition to shutting in wells, oil producers also halted most offshore drilling operations by evacuating three drilling rigs and moving eight others out of the storm area.”  


“For the first time ever, all UK EV drivers can enjoy the fastest rapid public charging options, powered by renewable energy, with the installation of Alfa Power’s new 60kW agnostic charger at Crown Service Station, Brighouse.” Customers can be confident that the new charging point has specifications which more than fulfil the needs of their latest EV vehicle; it is capable not only of 60kW charging but also of simultaneously charging up to four vehicles via several connectors, namely CCS (European Combined Charging System), Type 2 (European AC charger) and CHAdeMO (quick charging method). What is more, Alfa Power aim to continually upgrade their charging points to ensure that the needs of the UK’s growing EV market are fully met, with next steps set to include the installation of 100kW chargers at sites between major cities across the UK and beyond.”  


The Korea Herald has driven the Kia e-Niro: “Defying the popular notion that EVs are unstable at high speeds, the Niro glided quietly on the highway at about 120 kilometers per hour, showing outstanding stability. For most drivers accustomed to fueling up their cars in a few minutes, the time required to charge an EV might come across as a downside. The tradeoff, however, was exceptional cost-effectiveness: It cost only 4,895 won ($4.30) to charge 28.3 kilowatt-hours, which converts to a driving distance of 170 kilometers. A full charge would have cost about 9,000 won, roughly one-tenth the cost of filling the gas tank in an average fuel-powered small to midsize sedan. The number of EV chargers was tallied at 5,886 nationwide as of June, more than eight times the number that existed in August 2016, which stood at 711, according to the Environment Ministry.”



“Volkswagen Group – starting next year -, will bring its own electric triplets and this time with enough range and a more reasonable price tag.
