BP TRIALS FREEWIRE EV CHARGING SYSTEM IN HAMMERSMITH

“BP has launched a trial of FreeWire EV rapid charging service, which will run until the end of October.” according to PetrolPlaza.com “BP FreeWire is a mobile rapid charging system, capable of recharging EVs at up to 50 kW. It will achieve 80% of battery life in approximately 30 minutes, according to BP. During this trial, charging is free – as is parking – and EV drivers simply need to park up. A FreeWire operator will be available on-site, who will explain the set-up and will start and end the charging.”  

MICROLINO PRE-ORDERS HIT 8000

Earlier this week on the podcast we were talking about the BMW pre-order of the iX3, not available until 2020 but they were testing the waters for pre-orders. THey did ok with 1000. Meet the Micfrolino, a new company which just exceeded $100m, in pre-orders. It’s not exactly a successor to the bubble car or the BMW Isetta, with a single dorr on the front which you swing open to enter. THey say: ““The goal was to create a vehicle, which was inspired by the bubble cars from the 50’s, but with modern design and technology. In addition, it should be eco-friendly in production and during usage.”” Those pre-orders coming mostly from Germany and Switzerland, again with a 1000Euro deposit, but there’s no two year wait until production starts like the BMW, they’re kicking off in October. Micah Toll for Electrek says: “The retro design and appealing marketing have been successful at winning over new drivers, with the company announcing over 8,000 pre-orders for the new vehicles. At €12,000 ($14,000), the Microlino’s price is not that much higher than many commuter electric motorcycles, and considerably cheaper than some other affordable family sized electric cars. The little bubble car’s top speed is 90 km/h (56 mph) and range is estimated at 125-200 km (78-125 mi) with either an 8 kWh or 14.4 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery pack.”

PRINCE CHARLES GETS HIS I-PACE

“As Jaguar dealerships in the United States anxiously await the arrival of the new I-PACE electric SUV, some can’t stop talking about one big name overseas celebrity already having his hands on one! We’re talking about Prince Charles!” reports Emma Moreau for SUVS.com: “The vehicle wasn’t just gifted to him, either. Prince Charles reportedly loved it so much he decided to lease the vehicle with money out of his own pocket. Ahead of the vehicle’s arrival, he even had a fast charger installed at the Clarence House home.”

WALLBOX CHARGERS GET FASHIONABLE

You know EVs are moving past the early adopters when you read a story like this. Coming via our friends at InsideEVs…: “Spanish charging station manufacturer – Wallbox – is approaching a milestone of 20,000 installations around the world (mostly in Europe, but also as far as in China and New Zealand). Three main products (soon to be presented at the British CENEX show) are “fashionable” charging stations.” Wallbox co-founder and CEO Enric Asuncion says: “To date the emergence of electric propulsion has mostly been framed in terms of societal and environmental change. We recognize these big issues but are also responding with a new design language, one that rewards the important choices people are making with solid engineering, creativity and functionality to deliver charging solutions that have emotion and flair.”

AUDI WANT YOU TO NOTICE THEIR (CHARGING) SPEED

Fresh from excitement about the Mercedes EQC, which looks incredible, today I want to go big on the Audi e-tron Quattro, a car i’ve raved about for months and now it’s days away, being revealed in San Francisco on Monday 17th September. We know it’s called Quattro, so that’s a dead giveaway to motors on the front and rear axle, for 4 wheel drive. In a previous test we also heard it has a boost mode for up to 8 seconds of full-banzai attack driving. The battery is a 95kWh pack so, on a heavy SUV, any range number over 200 miles in the real world on a cold, wet day would be good. If you’re Audi and you’ve been building your showpiece EV, the e-tron Quattro, it must be a bit annoying to lose out to certain performance specs like the Tesla Model 3 doing 0-60mph in 3.5secs (and quicker if you change the tyres), especially as performance is a pillar of the Audi brand. All we know is the e-tron will get to 60mph in under 6 seconds. There’s a new teaser called “electric has gone thrilling”. But that hasn’t stopped them promoting the speed of their first EV, but specifically the speed it charges. They say its the first series-production car to charge at 150kW. We’ll see the car unveiled next week without the camouflage. In advance of that, Audi announced a scheme for Audi e-tron Quattro owners to access a charging network of 72,000 chargers across Europe, and that includes the network they’re part of which is IONITY. IONITY has big plans for their 350kW chargers with 400 promised by 2020, however the handful out there at the moment are few and far between. The same goes for Electrify America which has a large rollout to do, very quickly, to start installing them in respectable numbers. Audi’s solution also isn’t quite as frictionless as Tesla because you need a special card at launch but they do have plans the fix that. To start with, the access card will handle all the billing across multiple networks, in 16 countries. Audi told us today: “Drivers who charge their e-tron overnight and set off the next morning with a full battery don’t have to worry about stopping at a charging station during their normal daily drive. The range of more than 400 kilometers (248.5 mi) in the realistic WLTP cycle enables electric driving without compromise. For longer distances, Audi offers a smart solution in the shape of the e-tron Charging Service, which handles the charging process swiftly and simply. The e-tron Charging Service builds confidence in our electric initiative. Following on from the Audi e-tron, in 2019 the Audi e-tron Sportback will be the second electric car to go on sale, followed in 2020 by the Audi e-tron GT from Audi Sport.” “From 2019 onward, charging will be even more convenient for Audi customers. This is when the plug & charge function will be introduced. It enables the Audi e-tron to authenticate itself at charging stations via state-of-the-art cryptographic procedures, after which it is authorized – a card will no longer be necessary. All Audi e-tron models rolling off the assembly line from mid-2019 will support this function as standard. Customers can also use plug & charge privately to unlock their connect charging system. This then eliminates the need to enter a PIN to protect against unauthorized use.” “Audi offers various solutions for charging in the garage at home: The standard compact mobile charging system can be used with either a 230 volt household outlet or a 400 volt three-phase outlet. The optional connect charging system doubles the charging power to as much as 22 kW. The second on-board charger required for this will be available as an option at some point in 2019.” My take: for Audi buyers they expect nothing less. No Audi owner wants a wallet full of membership cards or fobs for different networks driving across Europe….

There are different battery sizes even within the Powershot camera models, so of course different battery chargers have been made to accommodate them. They’ll differ in actual sizes as well as pin placement depending on the design of the camera that they are to be used with. Two popular rechargeable batteries are made to be used with the CB-2LV and CB-2LU battery chargers.

When traveling, things inevitably get lost. This occurs frequently with electronics accessories like battery chargers and cell phone chargers. NEWS IN BRIEF!

Kicking off with some news in brief, and some quick bite-size headlines: The government of India is planning to subsidize EV charging infrastructure to speed up the EV revolution there, describing the situation with the well-worn chicken and egg metaphor, what comes first, the cars or the chargers. OPEL/Vauxhall has followed up their teaser with images of the GT X Experimental Concept – a compact SUV concept with coupe appeal, EV powertrain, with inductive charging and a 50kWh battery. Except it doesn’t because they haven’t even built a concept, it’s a picture. So they can give it whatever specs they want. And the average Sale Price Of Tesla Model 3 Now At $59,000, although that’s not an official line from Tesla, it crowdsources 4,600 Model 3 owners and what they paid, with that price going up due to AWD and Performance options more recently available.  

TESLA MODEL 3 DEBUTS IN AUSTRALIA BUT NOT ON SALE UNTIL LATE 2019

Tesla has flown in 3 production versions of the Model 3 to let Australian fans have a look around. And boy did they ever! Some people queued for hours to get just a few minutes with the car at showrooms in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. Australian customers, like all those who paid their deposit over two years ago still have a year to wait before driving their cars. The best guesstimate for local deliveries is production starting in the next 12 months with deliveries to commence in the next 12 to 18 months. Here in the UK we don’t expect RHD model to appear before July 2019. I gather the model on display is the cheapest, long range RWD model, which is $66,610 in local currency before taxes and import duties are applied. Add those and you’re looking at $80,000 drive-away Aussie dollars The queues don’t surprise me because there’s a pent up demand to see it in the flesh. When I went to the Goodwood Festival of Speed earlier this year it’s such aa different experience to studying photos.  

HYUNDAI KONA EV HAS THE LONGEST EPA RANGE OF ANY NON-TESLA EV

Recently on the show you and I went through the newly official EPA rating of the Hyundai KONA EV, or at least the long range 64kWh battery version, which is the only one being sold in North America. And I even mentioned it was more than the Chevrolet Bolt but I didn’t connect enough dots to make this statement. The KONA EV is the longest range of any electric vehicle currently on sale that isn’t built by Tesla. So the KONA pack stores 4kWH more energy than the Bolt, and as we’ve seen with the IONIQ Hyundai are getting a reputation for building efficient EVs. In terms of charging the KONA i want to say again, Hyundai have this really confusing way of describing it online and on press releases, they give the charge time of 54minutes when connected to a 100kW charger. However please remember, with the current of 200amps on the battery pack, and even 200amps being the max current on the current CCS plug, the theoretical max charge speed is ~72kW. I’ve been guilty in the past of saying it’s capable of 100kW charging but that’s an urban myth for some reason. That’s still a great speed by the way, 54mins to 80% at that speed, 75 mins on a 50kW charger and 9.5hours on the 7.2kW onboard.  

HYUNDAI IONIQ EV N PERFORMANCE COULD BE COMING

“Hyundai are planning to deliver electric N Performance models after the current crop of N cars, with the Hyundai Ioniq EV N looking to be in the frame.” says carsuk.net: “Hyundai’s N boss Albert Biermann, speaking to Automotive News, says the N Brand won’t be able to avoid electrification past 2021, and he seems to have a clear idea of what could be done. He said: “As an example, we have an Ioniq EV. Were we to find a nice battery, a bigger motor and inverter, we could make an Ioniq EV N with a nice chassis and more power. Something like that is not fully crazy.”

JAPAN AND CHINA COULD STANDARDIZE EV FAST-CHARGING SYSTEM

“Japanese and Chinese industry groups have agreed to standardize a next-generation fast-charging system for electric vehicles (EVs), it has been learned, in an effort to jointly develop a charger by 2020 that can fully charge a vehicle in less than 10 minutes.” writes Yomiuri Shimbun for Japan News: “By joining hands, Japan and China will hold more than 90 percent of the market for fast chargers and take a major step toward achieving a global standard. The CHAdeMo Association, a group of auto and battery makers that promote Japan’s fast-charging standard, called CHAdeMo, is expected to sign an agreement with the China Electricity Council (CEC) in Beijing by the end of this month. CEC promotes China’s standard, called GB/T. Japan and China aim to commercialize a new system capable of producing more than 500 kilowatts. If the Japan-China team succeeds in establishing a global standard, it will become easier for Japan to export EVs, benefitting battery makers that possess advanced expertise in terms of production and sales. More than 80 percent of fast chargers installed worldwide in 2018, or 220,000 units, used China’s GB/T standard”

MAJOR VW DIGITAL ANNOUNCEMENT

“Volkswagen has confirmed the launch of a new e-mobility car-sharing service in Berlin, as the German automaker looks to move beyond traditional vehicle ownership. The VW brand, which makes up around half of sales generated by the parent Volkswagen Group, said 1,500 e-Golf cars will be rolled out onto streets of the German capital during the second quarter of 2019.” reports CNBC: “The company has predicted 15 percent annual growth in Europe for on-demand vehicles. Car-sharing has become a major play for auto firms who predict that younger customers, especially those living in cities, are less interested in committing to a large capital outlay for a car.”  

Whilst that got all the headlines, none of the media picked up on two other announcements, which shows how little they understand about the EV industry. Firstly, the new ID was referred to as the ‘Neo’. Apart from an article by Bild back in April, this is the first time I’ve ever heard it official called Neo by VW. Secondly they cofirmed their EV’s would have Over The Air (OTA) updates for software. Also a big improvement and catching up with Tesla.  

Autoblog has details on the Operating System: “The German automaker said on Thursday it was working on a new software operating system, to be known as “vw.OS.” which will be introduced in VW brand electric cars from 2020 onward. Rather than having around 70 different sensors and controllers operating independently within each vehicle, the new cars will connect the various sensors using the new proprietary software operating system. VW said it was easier to do over-the-air software updates for cars if the operating system was designed in-house, rather than depending on third-party software supplied by the different vendors providing various sensors.”

TESLA SEMI FACES NEW WAVE OF SKEPTICISM

Simon Alvarez at Teslarati is looking back at the claims at the Tesla Semi launch: “Musk noted that the Semi could cost operators $1.26 per mile to run, less than the standard $1.51 per mile that diesel-powered vehicles cost. That said, Allen Schaeffer, executive director of the Diesel Technology Forum trade group, is skeptical of Musk’s claims, noting that there is little need for a new entrant in the shipping industry.” “It’s easy if you’re just coming into this market to say ‘they’re $1.50 per mile and we can do it for $1.20. But where’s the proof? I haven’t seen it. Diesel is the benchmark for energy efficiency. Diesel dominates the entire sector,” he said.

Why You Should Consider Electric Forklifts Over Other Models

Forklifts are indispensable in more than a few industries, and if you check the market, there are some amazing choices worth considering. Let’s start by saying that forklifts are expensive workhorses for any business, and therefore, as a customer, you should be very prudent and well informed about all aspects. If you don’t have the finances to afford a new one, used models are worthy too. All you need to do is find the right seller, and with many of these companies going online, you don’t even have to try hard. Make sure that the seller is a known and trusted one, and he should offer services of shipping and inspection. No matter how busy you may be, it is also a good idea to get the model inspected independently. As for the shipping, some sellers may not charge you if you in the same city, but for distance delivery, costs may be applicable.

Given that forklifts are expensive, you should rather be very careful about choosing both manufacturers and sellers. Used models can do the job right, especially when you don’t have extensive use, but at the same time, you can even consider new forklifts by taking advantage of financing options, offered by many sellers. The Differences Between SodaStream Models

Many people want to get a SodaStream but have no idea which model is best for them. It can be difficult to choose, especially when the SodaStream company has no information highlighting the differences between the models. Here is a brief overview explaining which features are unique to the models.

There are currently eight SodaStream models available. They are The Revolution, The Source, The Fizz, The Crystal, The Pure, The Fountain Jet, The Dynamo and The Genesis. First, let’s address the similarities of all eight types. All of the eight models can make soda or sparkling water in the convenience of your home. All come with “stay fizzy” bottle closures that keep the carbonation in longer. All are compatible with the standard 14.5 ounce carbonation cylinder which is capable of carbonating up to sixty liters of soda or sparkling water.

There are four models which are capable of using either the 14.5 ounce carbonation cylinder or the larger 33 ounce cylinder, which is capable of carbonating up to 130 liters of soda or sparkling water. Those four models are The Revolution, The Dynamo, The Fountain Jet and The Fizz.

All eight models use the CO2 tank as a power source to carbonate. The Crystal, The Pure, The Dynamo, The Fountain Jet and The Genesis require no additional power source to operate. The Fizz and The Source do require a battery to operate the display components. That battery is included. The Revolution is the only model which requires electricity to work. Keep this in mind, as it will need to be near an outlet when used.

The Crystal comes with a dishwasher safe glass carafe. The other seven models come with BPA-free plastic bottles that are not dishwasher safe. You can buy dishwasher safe bottles separately that are compatible with those seven models, but you can not use the glass carafe with any model other than the Crystal.

The Dynamo, The Fountain Jet, The Pure, The Fizz and The Genesis all require the user to twist the bottle into place. The Crystal, The Revolution and The Source all lock the bottle into place without twisting, making them a little easier to use.

There is only one fully automated SodaStream available at this time. That is The Revolution. You simply press a button to tell it how carbonated you would like your drink and it does the rest for you. It also measures the CO2 levels to let you know how much is left in your carbonation cylinder. The Fizz is not automated but it does monitor and display the amount of carbonation in your drink as well as the level of CO2 in your cylinder. The Source has three LED lights to let you know how much carbonation is in your drink, but does not monitor the CO2 left in your cylinder.
