Pros and Cons of Installing a Cold Air Intake On Your Truck

Increasing the performance and power of your truck does not necessitate installing a new motor or transmission, though those can definitely be options. One easy to install option that is gaining popularity with the truck crowd is that of the cold air intake. Cold air intakes have long been a staple of racing and street racing cars, but they can just as easily apply to your truck. Why would you install a cold air intake on your truck? Let’s look at how they work, first.

A cold air intake system takes the place of your OEM air filter and intake system. Ordinarily, you will need to remove the original breather box, as well as the tubing that leads to the engine. By installing a cold air intake, you can add horsepower to your truck. This happens because a cold air intake brings in cooler air to your engine. Cool air is much more dense than warm air. This means that your engine can burn fuel much more efficiently, increasing your available horsepower. While the gain will not be incredible, it will be noticeable.

The cold air intake system is usually routed in a similar fashion as your OEM system, at the engine. As it travels out from there, though, it will terminate at a different location. This is usually low down the engine, behind the headlights, or even lower down. The object is to get the intake as far from the heat of your engine as possible. This is the only way to get air that is cold enough to do the job right.

What else does a cold air intake do for your vehicle? It can increase fuel mileage under certain conditions, though this is not why most people install them on their vehicles. The primary reason, of course, is to add power in the form of speed and torque. Some of the more popular brands are K&N and Volant. Understand, also, that adding a cold air intake to your truck will change the way your truck sounds. While it won’t sound like a street racer, it will definitely sound different.

Now, let’s look at some of the drawbacks to adding a cold air intake.

First, there is the expense. While they are relatively inexpensive when compared to other truck accessories and performance enhancers, they do represent at least a modest investment. You must also modify your vehicle; many times by yourself. Some dealerships will not install these devices on trucks, while others will charge considerable labor fees.

The single largest drawback, though, comes in the form of water. This threat is much more prevalent in shorter vehicles, such as passenger cars, but it is present for trucks as well. The placement of the air filter makes is possible for water to splash up from the road or mud hole into the air filter. From there, it is sucked along the intake tube until it gets to your engine. Once there, it wreaks havoc. Granted, it takes more than a few drops of water to disable your engine, but the threat is present and must be considered when debating adding one of these systems to your truck.

That said, there are few drawbacks to this, especially in exchange for the additional horsepower that you will enjoy. You can find a number of quality systems that will work well in this situation, though K&N has been a trusted name for years. Their filters are designed to last for a lifetime, with only cleaning required to continue using the filter.

Single Premium Life Insurance – Pros and Cons

Single Premium Whole Life Insurance (SPLI) Explained

Most of the time, when we purchase life insurance, we agree to make monthly, quarterly, or yearly payments. There are some whole life policies which can be paid off, usually over a period of 7 years or more. But another way of purchasing coverage has begun to get more attention lately. This simply involves making one large payment in the beginning. The single premium is set to fund the coverage for the rest of an insured person’s life.

One obvious advantage might be the guarantee that life insurance is taken care of without having to worry about paying any more bills. One obvious disadvantage, as you may have already guessed, is the fact that this first premium must be pretty large.

Who Considers SPLI?

The type of person who may consider this unusual way of paying for a life insurance policy would have a lump sum of cash they are sure they will not need to spend for the next few years. They will also want to leave money to their estate, and they want to turn the cash they have into a larger life insurance death benefit. This way they can be assured they will be able to leave money to their kids, grand kids, or a favorite charity..

Advantages of Single Premium Life

  • Set it and Forget it – You can make on premium payment, and be assured you have funded a lifetime policy.
  • Estate Building – Most of the time, the cash will buy a death benefit of several times the original premium amount. For example, let us say that a healthy 65 year old could turn $12,000 into a $100,000 death benefit to leave behind. That was just an example. Premiums will vary.
  • Cash Value – Since the one large lump sum fund coverage, the actual cash valued of the policy should grow very quickly. The policy may have enough cash value to be borrowed against or cashed in at some future point. The cash value may grow by a set interest rate, or it may grow my some market index, like the S&P 500. This will be specified in the particular policy you buy.
  • Policy Provisions – Policies may have an accelerated death benefit, or provisions for early surrender or using some of the face value while the insured person is still alive in special cases. These cases could include terminal illness or nursing home confinement. These functions can give you a policy which performs “double duty.”

Disadvantages of SPLI

This product is not for everybody. Look at some of the disadvantages to consider.

  • You Need The Money – You must have the lump sum payment. Of course, the premium will vary by the age and health of the insured person, the insurer, and the amount of coverage you buy. The premium is usually several thousand dollars. This must be money that is not needed for the next few years, or ever. If this is in question, you may be better off by buying a policy with multiple payments.
  • Early Surrender Charges or Fees – Here’s why you must use money you will not need to live on. Most policies do have early surrender charges or fees. If you do have to cash in the policy before this term, set in your individual policy, you will probably get back less than you put in. You can only benefit if you can wait until the date of fees or surrender charges has passed.
  • Tax Considerations – These type of policies, purchased with one payment, are considered to be Modified Endowment Contracts (MEC) by the IRS. They do not have all of the tax advantages or regular life insurance.

Example of SPLI

Let us say that a 65 year old retired teacher has a pension and savings which enable her to live comfortably. She also has $12,000 in cash from her own parent’s estate. She would like to turn this cash into a much larger estate she can split with her son and a favorite scholarship fund.

In this case, she is able to purchase a $100,000 single premium life policy. This works out well for her in a few ways. This policy has a provision for an accelerated death benefit in the cash of terminal illness or nursing home confinement, so she does not need to worry about purchasing another long term care policy.

Is Single Premium Life Right For You?

In order to make a good decision, it will help to figure out what you own retirement planning goals are. This product can be a good solution for some people.

Air Ionizer Purifier Pros and Cons

More and more people are looking for an air ionizer purifier to improve the air around them. However, you should be aware of the pros and cons of these purifiers to determine if they are right for you.

Many people today are concerned with the quality of air that they breathe. From outside pollution to what is known as sick building syndrome there are all kinds of things you can breathe in that will make you sick. Which has led to the rise in air purifying machines, but most people probably do not that all these machines are not the same. You have ionizers, negative ionizers and ozone ionic.

Ionizers- Any machine that uses charged ions or particles to purify the air by attracting dirt and pollution, is known as an ionizer. You may have heard these called many names including, electrostatic, Ionic breeze, Truman cell and electric.

Negative Ion- It actually works in reverse to the ionizing air purifiers. Instead of drawing in the pollution, these machines put out negatively charged ions into the area. These ions trap odors, dirt and some pollution eliminating them from the air.

Ozone- an ozone purifier will take oxygen and its two molecules and create a third oxygen molecule that is released into the air. This third oxygen molecule is a very effective weapon against mold and odors in the home.

Pros

Air ionizer purifiers are a relatively inexpensive way to clear the air around your house. Many have removable plates that can be removed and cleaned periodically, unlike HEPA systems that have filters, which must be replaced periodically.

If you are looking for a way to clear tiny air pollutant particles from the air around your home, you want a machine that will get the tiniest particles possible. Many of the air ionizers will eliminate particles as small as.01 microns. This is especially helpful for individuals concerned about second hand smoke.

Cons

If you have a problem with dust or pollen, an ionizing model is probably not the best choice. In order to keep your air clear of these pollutants as well you may need to incorporate the use of HEPA filtration in addition to any ionizers.

While the ozone air purifiers are expected to release ozone into the air, you should know that all ionizing air purifiers will have this effect, at least to a small degree. The buildup of ozone in your home can be very irritating to sensitive lungs, so beware.

Conclusion

Can these air purifiers provide a better quality of air inside your home? Yes, these machines can be helpful; however, you must be aware of each models limitations and functions. This is very important if you have allergies or asthma concerns. Remember that even with air purifiers you will still need to vacuum and dust regularly to keep indoor pollutants down.

Pros and Cons of Lithium Ion Batteries

The lithium-ion battery is very popular in a wide range of household electronics. They are common in items like MP3 players, phones, PDAs and laptops. Similar to other technologies, the lithium-ion battery has a wide range of pros and cons.

The pros:

High energy density – A major benefit is the high energy density of the lithium-ion battery. This gives the battery a high-power rating while still remaining at a relatively small size. The compact size makes it a popular choice in the mobile industry.

Low maintenance – There is no need to provide maintenance to the batteries to maintain their performance. Other types of batteries, such as the nickel-based units require a regular discharge to maintain optimal performance.

Quick charging – the lithium-ion battery is quick charging. The time-frame to fully charge is a lot less than alternatives in the market. This is a major reason why they are used in phones and tablets that are in need of the daily charging with regular use.

Light – They are relatively lightweight and small which makes them a practical choice in a wide-range of applications. In addition to small items like a phone, they are also a popular choice for electric cars and golf carts. Plus, they are commonly used in the aerospace industry.

Low self-discharge – The majority of batteries lose a certain amount of charge after disconnecting from a power source. But, the lithium-ion battery has a discharge rate that is much lower than other types of batteries. For instance, nickel-cadmium would lose its charge at a much faster rate even if the battery is left unused.

Longevity – This type of battery has great longevity and continues to give reliable performance over a very long period. Plus, they can receive a regular charge without seeing much of a difference in its capacity.

The cons:

Expensive – The process of making the lithium-ion battery is quite long and expensive. On average, this type of battery costs nearly 40 percent more to produce compared to the nickel-cadmium battery.

Transportation – It isn’t the easiest type of battery to transport and has several restrictions in place. For instance, it isn’t possible to transport the lithium-ion battery in high volume by air. However, it is still possible to fly with a few devices with the batteries in general luggage.

Circuit protection – The usable lifespan can be shortened if the battery is regularly overcharged. Also, these batteries have a built-in protection circuit to maintain the current and voltage and guarantee it is kept within safe limits.

The Pros and Cons of Personal Alarms

A lot of people are apprehensive in choosing some type of defensive device for their personal protection and in today’s society, with everyone being so lawsuit happy, it is definitely understandable. But the common criminal does not care about your inhibitions. He is just looking for an easy target and one of the easiest targets is a woman alone.

Everyone has an inherited right to protect themselves and their loved ones from personal harm. Personal protection will depend on the person and to what degree he or she feels the most comfortable. One of the most dependable and less aggressive forms of self-protection is the personal alarm.

Personal alarms are small devices that you can carry around with you when you are walking, jogging or cycling. There are many forms of personal alarms: battery, aerosol or whistle. The concept behind personal alarms is to offer an individual a non-lethal protection device by emitting a very loud siren to attract attention from bystanders or others in the area. This ear-piercing sound will often times thwart the assailant as well, giving you a chance to escape. Even if you are not involved in an incident but are witnessing a crime in progress, this type of alarm can be used to alert others without you becoming a potential victim.

Some of the pros of using personal alarms:

  • Easily carried on the body, wrist, belt
  • Non-lethal, loud siren
  • Ideal for children and women
  • Ideal for college students on campus
  • Joggers, cyclists
  • Night shift workers
  • Great for seniors or disabled

Even though personal alarms are effective, there are some disadvantages that will need addressing. Since personal alarms are a passive device, it will not subdue an assailant. If the sound does not disrupt his attack, the attacker could gain control of your alarm and disable it, leaving you defenseless. Consider adding a pepper spray or stun gun to your arsenal of personal protection gear.

Some of the cons of using personal alarms:

  • Does not disable the attacker
  • Passive device
  • Assailant could wrestle the alarm away from victim
  • Need of fresh batteries all the time (battery-operated models)

A majority of police officers and criminalists all agree that a lot of noise is sometimes the best inexpensive defensive weapon anyone can deploy against an assailant. The average criminal does not like attention and will usually depart the area quickly. Don’t be apprehensive in providing yourself or your loved ones the proper protection needed in today’s violent society. Make the decision now before it’s too late.

Pros and Cons of Each Type of Outdoor Motion Sensor Light

Outdoor motion sensor lights are a wonderful invention. They have made home safety and security much easier and user friendly for the home owner. There are three different types of outdoor motion sensor lights available electrical, battery operated and solar. Each has their own advantages and disadvantages when it comes to use and installation which will be detailed further in the paragraphs below.

The easiest type to work with and install is the battery operated and for the most part is also the least expensive. There are dozens of different brands with each brand having several different models. Most run off one of the common sizes of small batteries like AA, C and D. And just about all of them have LED bulbs because of the low amount of energy needed to power them. Now just because these are very basic lights doesn’t mean that there aren’t some really nice battery power motion lights because there is! The biggest disadvantage of using them is the amount of light they give off. Most are only good for lighting small areas like next to your front door so you can see to put the key in. As far as installation goes if you can use a screwdriver you can install these lights.

Solar motion sensor lights are the next easiest style to deal with. The biggest issue with these types of lights is that you must locate your light somewhere that you can place the solar panel in direct sun for an extended period of time. Fortunately the manufactures kept this in mind when designing the lights because most come with long cords, usually ten feet or more, to connect the solar panel to the light. Typically solar motion lights give off much more light than a battery powered light so they have much bigger range of uses. The bigger models can even be alternatives for hard wired security lights. Installation for these lights is about the same as the battery operated normally there are a few screws that mount to a bracket so no special skills are needed.

Last but not least is the standard hard wired motion sensor light. These lights come in a wide range of sizes and models as well and depending on what model you buy there are many features available including but not limited to an adjustable shutoff, manual on/off and built in daylight sensors. There are many advantages to using this style of light like having a much brighter light than battery or solar powered lights and never needing to change a battery or move a solar panel. But there are disadvantages too, like having to have a power source and needing to know something about wiring or hiring an electrician to install which cost money.

In the end it is up to you to choose what type of outdoor motion sensor light to use. Just keep these three things in mind and you should be fine; where do you need lighting, how much lighting will be enough, and do you plan to install the light or hire someone to do it.
