Harbor Freight Thunderbolt Magnum Solar 1.5 Watt Solar Battery Charger $15.
The solar panel conveniently plugs into your car’s 12 volt cigarette lighter. This solar battery trickle charger is the eco-friendly way to maintain the charge of any car, truck, marine or RV 12 volt battery. Good for survival and prepping.
If you connect a solar panel directly to a car battery, it will eventually overcharge the battery and damage it. That’s why you need to use a solar charge controller. This is my own design using the latest microcontroller and MOSFET circuitry. It consumes less than 1mA (that’s very little) and has a neat little blue LED that tells you the battery voltage. It can also be connected in various different configurations so you can do clever things like charge two batteries from one solar panel. You can get the PWM5 from www.256.co.uk
This is a review of the AllPowers solar car battery charger. This is a great device to keep your 12v car, boat or RV battery topped off during periods idle time. Comes with standard alligator clips and a cigarette lighter adapter. Good stuff to have when parking your car for extended periods of time.
Addition: 11/30/2015 I was talk’n to a guy who owns a number of trucks parked in Idaho, and he uses these solar chargers. He says he hooked them up directly to his battery and he didn’t put the panel in in the windshield. He mounted it on top/outside some how. So anyone wanting to try this might keep this in mind.
This solar battery charger/maintainer is used to keep the batteries maintained during cold weather and while the vehicle is parked for long periods of time without starting. As I reported in one of my previous videos I have been having a problem with my batteries in my Kenworth T 2000. So I went ahead and bought this 2.5 watt solar charger/maintainer to see if it’ll help keep the batteries up. It’s plug into my cigarette lighter. I’ll get back when I can, on how well it works out. I looked around on the net. It was cheaper and faster just go to Autozone. They had the best price and I didn’t have to wait for it to be shipped. The guy at Autozone said he has a friend that uses this charger to keep the batteries up in his rv and it works great. UPDATE: after 1 wk + I can’t yet vouch for the product. After 3 days sitting the truck was hard to start but it did start.
Addition: 3/18/15. I just tried starting my truck after 2 days beyond the last time started. It will not start. I can’t vouch for this product yet.
I use this for survival type situations (e.g. bug out bag) where you’d like to charge a cell phone, but there may be no electricity. I also use this for long work days while commuting around downtown Seattle. Even charges when it’s cloudy!
📍 Bottom line: would I recommend this product to one of my friends?
👍 Yes, but be patient when it’s charging from the sun.

Tests of output volts and amps produced before and after removing the blinking LED. Both overcast sky and bright sunshine. I hook up a DC to DC Buck Converter and explain it a bit. I run a USB charging port, I charge a camera and a cell phone. I use the panel to make a batch of colloidal silver. I test the panel with a simple solar charge controller. I charge a 12v- 3ah lead acid battery. This solar panel is not weather proof because it’s designed to be used on the dash of an enclosed vehicle.
